Plantars Wart? Callus? What is it?

Posted: January 28th, 2021

Do you or have you ever stepped down on a hard surface mostly without shoes and feel a sharp pain that  penetrated up into your foot? Only to find a hard build up of skin (callus) underneath your foot. Of course, your first thought is "I have a Plantars Wart."

Well, that just might be true, however 95% of the time it is not. Most likely this condition is called Intractable Plantar Keratosis (IPK). These painful lesions mostly have an organized plug or collection of dead skin cells that accumulate in the center of the lesion. Intractable meaning difficult to manage or remove, Plantar meaning bottom, and Keratosis meaning dead skin growth.

I even hear at times from patients that other physicians are telling them that these lesions are "clogged sweat glands." False! That belief has been debunked by scientific methods and by the dermatopathology profession.

Debridement of these lesions is still the primary treatment for this problem with other treatment options possibly available.
